Dorothy Lillian Karon – 92, of Virginia passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 in Eveleth. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 29 at 10:00 a.m. at the B’nai Abraham Synagogue in Virginia. Rabbi Phillip M. Sher will be officiating. Arrangements are entrusted with Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Dorothy was born on April 7, 1919 in Virginia to Barney and Ida (Schwartz) Karon. She attended the Virginia schools and graduated from Roosevelt High School and Virginia Junior College. She subsequently attended and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern California. After graduation, she worked with her father running the Karon Oil Company until his death and then she took over the ownership and management of her father’s business until her retirement.

On May 25, 1983, the Mayor of the City of Virginia proclaimed that day to be “Dorothy Karon Day” in recognition of her distinguished service to the City of Virginia. She was further honored by a recognition banquet on that day.

Dorothy was active statewide in her support of libraries. She was appointed and served as the president of the Virginia Library Commission. She received a Certificate of Outstanding Achievement from the North County Library Cooperative. She advocated and was involved with upgrading and expansion of the Virginia Public Library. She was referred to as a “lady of vision and dedication” who spurred the formation of the Arrowhead Library System. She served as president of that board from 1966 to 1977.

Dorothy was also active in the affairs of B’nai Abraham Synagogue and for many years served as its treasurer.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved sister, Dolores. She is survived by several cousins and related family.

Dorothy wished to give special thanks to Tim Rosengren of Duluth and Angie Sistad, her “good neighbor”, for their years of companionship and comfort.
